At dawn, Pavlohrad is still dark. The sirens sound: another air raid alert. Three women make their way toward a mining facility, an archaic silhouette amid a modern city at war. They enter a metal elevator and disappear underground.

Down there, the war seems to fade away, but it is everywhere: in the urgency, in the shortage of workers, in the machines that have to be kept running “for two,” in the awareness that every tonne of coal extracted is a little more light above ground where the electricity goes out, where infrastructure is being struck, where families heat their homes as best they can.

The film follows three women’s lives at the heart of this industry: underground, where every movement is dangerous; on the surface, in domestic life; and through civic engagement – volunteering, helping soldiers, and supporting the local community.

Through their stories, we explore how women’s work becomes a line of defense, a form of everyday resistance in a war that is targeting energy itself.
